Patrick Hartigan
19 Feb – 05 Apr 2025
Melbourne
Patrick Hartigan, one of Australia’s most distinctive painters, presents a body of work encompassing the last 15 years of his practice at 1301SW, Melbourne. The exhibition moves easily between abstraction and figuration and offers a thorough scope of Hartigan’s exploration of painting. Proceeding from a number of departure points, be it the compositional play and restrained palette of Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca, the environment of his studio, or the very act of painting, it is a heightened curiosity towards materials that leads to their distinctive outcomes.
Hartigan has been regularly exhibiting in Australia, NZ and the UK since 2004. His work is held in a number of private and public collections, including National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney; Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, New Zealand; University of Wollongong; and Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne. He has produced two books, Offcuts and The Village is Quiet, both published by Gazebo Books.
